Exploring the Historic Center of Dijon

We begin our day in the historic center of Dijon, one of the largest pedestrian zones in France. This beautifully preserved area, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the "Climats de Bourgogne," invites you to wander through narrow cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and elegant townhouses with glazed tile roofs and intricate stonework.
We make a stop at the Les Halles Market, a 19th-century architectural gem where local artisans and producers showcase the best of Burgundy’s culinary heritage.
Next, we visit one of Dijon’s cultural highlights: the Museum of Fine Arts, housed within the former Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. Among its many treasures, the museum holds the tombs of the Dukes, including the magnificent funerary monument of Philip the Bold and his son John the Fearless — masterpieces of Gothic sculpture.
Philip the Bold holds a special place in Burgundy’s wine history. In 1395, he issued a decree banning the cultivation of gamay grapes on his estates, declaring pinot noir to be the only variety worthy of producing fine wines. This visionary decision laid the foundation for Burgundy’s identity as a world-renowned region for pinot noir — a legacy that continues to shape its vineyards today.

A Gourmet Lunch at a Selected Restaurant
For lunch, we head to a refined local restaurant where Burgundy’s culinary excellence takes center stage. Whether you’re enjoying a contemporary take on classic dishes or savoring time-honored regional specialties, each plate paired with a carefully chosen selection of local wines. From escargots de Bourgogne to boeuf bourguignon, your palate will be treated to the very best the region has to offer.

Private Wine Tasting in the Côte de Nuits
After lunch, we take the scenic drive through the renowned Côte de Nuits, one of Burgundy’s most celebrated pinot noir growing regions. As we wind through picturesque vineyards, you’ll gain insight into the unique terroir that shapes the wines here.
Our destination is a family wine estate, where you’ll enjoy a bespoke tasting experience. Here, you’ll discover the intricacies of their craft, and taste some of the finest wines of Burgundy.
Scenic Return Through the Vineyards
On our return journey, we take a moment to pause and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of the vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée. The warm afternoon light casts a golden glow over the vines, providing the perfect backdrop for reflecting on the day’s experiences or simply soaking in the beauty of this iconic landscape.

Did You Know? Philip the Bold, Father of Burgundy’s Pinot Noir
In 1395, Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, made a bold and visionary decision that would shape the future of Burgundy’s vineyards forever. He banned the cultivation of the gamay grape, calling it “disloyal and harmful,” and ordered that only pinot noir be planted on his estates.
His goal was to elevate the quality of Burgundy’s wines by promoting a grape that was more refined and expressive of the terroir. Though more delicate and demanding, pinot noir quickly became the signature grape of the region.
Over six centuries later, Philip’s influence lives on in every bottle. The world-renowned Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits are direct heirs of this ducal vision — a legacy of precision, elegance, and excellence.
